Drifting Toward Twilight is a site-specific commission made by Betye Saar (b. 1926) for The Huntington. The immersive installation features a monumental wooden canoe, found objects, and natural materials.
Saar, who grew up in Pasadena in the 1930s, is a pioneer of assemblage art and part of a foundational generation of Black artists in Los Angeles. This volume includes interviews with the artist and essays by poet and novelist Ishmael Reed, critic Hilton Als, scholar Tiffany E. Barber, and co-curators Yinshi Lerman-Tan and Sola Saar Agustsson.
Richly illustrated, it features rare early artworks, ephemera, and personal photographs, courtesy of the artist and Roberts Projects.
